Go Green in March: 12 Easy Ways to Keep Your Home Eco-Friendly

March 20, 2025

Hurrah! March has arrived. The arrival of March is exciting because it means we are one step closer to spring. So, let us ask you this: What does spring signify to you? Do you envision shades of green this month? Do you dream of shamrocks, leprechauns, and greener lawns?

In keeping with March’s green theme, our heating and cooling experts share 12 tips for “staying green” this season—and all year.

It’s Easy to “Go Green” This Spring

Kermit the Frog may have felt that "being green" wasn’t easy, but we beg to differ. In addition to scheduling that regular spring HVAC tune-up, try these tricks to help save energy and money in 2025.

  1. Get the lint out

Consider cleaning your dryer duct as part of your spring-cleaning routine. This will protect your dryer and help it run more efficiently.

  2. Clean fridge coils

The space underneath our refrigerators can get pretty icky, and dirty fridge coils are included. A long, skinny brush will work well to remove dirt and gunk from under your fridge and on the coils. It may even help improve your fridge’s efficiency!

  3. Wash clothes in cold

Wash your clothing in cold water to relieve the pressure on your hot water heater. Your sweatshirts and jeans will still get clean!

  4. Invest in window treatments

Want an easy way to trap heat indoors during winter and block out the sun’s rays in the summer? Shop for some insulated curtains or UV block-out shades! Yes, it really is that easy.

  5. Run the dishwasher after peak hours

Fill your dishwasher during the day, but run it at nighttime, after peak energy hours. Most new dishwashers have settings that allow you to delay the start of a cycle for a few hours. Set yours to start after you go to bed. Also, wait to run the dishwasher until it is fully loaded. Have issues with the hot water cycle? You can always call our techs for hot water heater maintenance.

  6. Use drying racks

Cut back on running the dryer by hanging clothes on drying racks. Not only can this help clothing last longer, but it cuts back on energy use. Once the weather gets warmer, consider line-drying clothing outdoors.

  7. Re-use water

Recycling unused water is a great way to go green. If dog bowls need to be emptied, or you have leftover water in a drinking cup or bottle, use that overflow to water houseplants!

  8. Replace plastic bottles with a reusable water bottle

Say goodbye to plastic water bottles for good. Switch to one of the many reusable water bottles on the market these days, and you’ll be helping the planet significantly.

  9. Replace light bulbs with LED bulbs

Swap out any old incandescent lightbulbs with new LED ones. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, LED lightbulbs last three to five times longer than regular incandescent bulbs.

  10. Buy some power strips

Every little thing adds up to savings! Plug TVs, laptops, and other smaller devices into power strips. Flip off the switch at night when not in use, so you’re not wasting energy when devices aren’t in use. (Note: Avoid plugging major appliances like refrigerators and microwaves into power strips as they may overload the power strip.)

  11. Get a low-flow showerhead

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. households could save up to 2,700 gallons of water annually by switching to low-flow Watersense-labeled shower heads.
