Heat Pump Problems? Our Troubleshooting Guide Will Help

-

Your heat pump keeps your home comfortable all year long — through chilly winters and sizzling summers. But like any hardworking system, it can run into issues. If you've noticed your heat pump is exhibiting poor temperatures, strange noises, or start-up trouble, we've got your back.

In this heat pump troubleshooting guide, we offer quick tips, answers to common questions, and smart solutions that will help your heat pump run smoothly throughout every season.

Heat Pumps 101

For homeowners who might not be familiar with heat pumps, let's start with the basics. It's called a heat pump because it transfers heat rather than generating it. In the summer, it pushes warm air out; in winter, it pulls warm air in. It's a dual comfort system that is both economical and efficient.

But how long does a heat pump last? Generally speaking, heat pumps can last up to 10 years. However, many factors need to happen to keep them running smoothly, including maintenance, usage, and climate. In addition, heat pumps are often more common in milder climates and perform best in temperatures over 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Let's dive into some common heat pump problems you might experience as a heat pump owner—and how to solve them.

Troubleshooting Heat Pump Issues

Experiencing heat pump troubles? Try these tricks from our experts.

Problem: Your heat pump is not heating or cooling properly.

  • Check the filter. If your air filter is dirty, it will make your system work harder than it needs to, possibly increasing energy bills while decreasing efficiency. Replace the air filter in your heat pump.
  • Check that all registers are open.
  • Make sure the coils in the outdoor unit are clean.

Problem: Your heat pump is not turning on.

  • Check the thermostat. Be sure it is set to the correct mode (heat v. cooling). Set the desired temperature above or below the current indoor temperature.
  • Change batteries. Does your thermostat use batteries? They could be dead. Replace with new ones to see if things improve.
  • Check the circuit breaker. If you have a tripped circuit breaker, your heat pump won't turn on. Reset the tripped breaker.
  • Inspect the outdoor unit. Make sure no debris is obstructing it. Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that could block airflow.

Problem: You need to reset your heat pump but aren't sure how.

  • Turn off your thermostat (turn the switch off).
  • Turn off the power switch on the outdoor unit cabinet.
  • Turn off electrical breakers (turn the heat pump switch off).
  • Wait five minutes for the system to reset.
  • After five minutes, turn the electrical breakers back on, flip the outdoor unit's power switch on, turn on the thermostat, and set it to the desired temperature.

Problem: Your heat pump constantly trips the breaker.

This could indicate an electrical problem or perhaps the unit is over amping caused by a dirty outdoor unit.

  • If the breaker is tripping outside, you can try cleaning the coil.
  • If it's anything else, we recommend you call us for a professional evaluation.

Problem: Your heat pump turns off and on when it shouldn't.

  • You may have a clogged or dirty filter. Simply replace it.
  • Your thermostat may need to be recalibrated. Check your owner's manual for calibration instructions—or call our team for a quick fix.

Problem: Your heat pump is noisy.

  • Check the air handler. Loose cover panels or loose parts may cause a rattling noise in the air handler. Tightening these may help.
  • Check the grills on the supply and return vents—sometimes the noise comes from them.
  • If your noisy heat pump makes a grinding or squealing noise, the motor's bearings may be worn out. A professional HVAC technician may need to replace the motor. Call us for an official diagnosis!
